HLTH 0350: Driver Education  (FALL/SUMMER)

 

Purpose:

 

The prime purpose is to certify students for classroom or behind-the wheel instruction in driver education.  Included will be the content and instructional techniques that are essential for effective teaching.  Students will practice behind-the-wheel techniques in a fully equipped driver education car.  The course is only offered for undergraduate credit.

 

 

HLTH 505: Contemporary Methods, Material and Evaluation in Driver Education (FALL/SUMMER)

 

Purpose:

 

This course will provide instruction in, and practical application of methods and materials in all phases of Traffic Safety Education.  Future teachers will have an opportunity to plan and apply program materials in Traffic Safety, which will culminate in the development of a 30-hour classroom instructional unit for teaching Driver Education and a 6 hours Behind the Wheel (BTW) teaching unit.  All written assignments will reflect empirical data based on literature reviews and student-designed surveys.  Participating graduate students are accepted from various areas of teaching specialization.  The course content and learning experiences satisfy certification requirements to teach Driver Education in New Jersey and partially satisfy certification requirements in New York.  The course can be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit.  Requirements for graduate students are clearly defined.   If not noted for graduate students, undergraduate students are expected to complete all other assignments and requirements that are similar to graduate students.

 

 

HLTH 503: Defensive Driving Teaching Techniques (SPRING/SUMMER)

 

Purpose:

 

The purpose of this course is to develop classroom and behind the wheel perceptual (IPDE) instructional skills.  Students will explore the habits, attitudes, and practices with which drivers are confronted.  Instructional strategies that can be applied to a six-hour defensive driving course will also be developed.  The content of the course will include classroom methods and contents that inter-relate with behind-the wheel evasive maneuvers.

 

 

HLTH 506: Trends and Issues in Driver Education (SUMMER)

 

Purpose:

 

Driver Education teachers will have an opportunity to research (via library and Internet resources) current trends and issues in traffic safety education.  Students will have an opportunity to update their background on the most recent information on critical issues confronting law enforcement personnel and traffic safety educators.  The most up-to-date sources will provide traffic safety educators with an opportunity to be aware of changes in content of traffic safety education.

 

 

HLTH 509: Driver Education for Disabled people.

 

Purpose:

 

The course is designed as an introductory course on teaching driver education to the physically or mentally (EMS) impaired students.  Students will study the characteristics and restrictions of various physical/mental handicaps imposed on students.  Overview of the various physical/mental imposed on students with special needs.  Overview of the various instructional aids will be explored with hands- on experiences.  Students will have an opportunity to observe proper use of hand control vans at Kessler Institute in West Orange.  Special education teacher that work with special needs students will be able to apply the course for driver education certification.

 

 

HLTH 507: Principles of Safety and Accident Prevention (SPRING)

 

Purpose:


This course presents an interdisciplinary approach to Safety Education. Guidelines in safety procedures cover the following major areas: 1) domestic hazards; 2) fire safety problems; 3) athletic and recreation issues; 4) industrial practices; and 5) firearms issues. Insight into the nature of the problems and designed preventive programs are presented.
