Recommended Utilities
WinZip ($29)
From the author:
Zip files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files. Zip files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a Zip are compressed to save space. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster. WinZip makes it easy for Windows users to work with archives. WinZip features an intuitive point-and-click drag-and-drop interface for viewing, running, extracting, adding, deleting, and testing files in archives with a standard Windows interface. WinZip provides the same "friendly face" for all the aforementioned archive formats.

ClipTrakker ($25)
This is an extended Windows ClipBoard manager by Silicon Prairie Software, which keeps a history of every cut or copy operation that you make in any application. You can then paste a combined set of clipped items or pick and choose individual clips to paste. You can even clip images! Although Office 2000 and XP has a similar utility, ClipTrakker works with all your applications, is less obtrusive, has lots of great features, and records an unlimited set of clips. It is an excellent tool for doing research over the Internet for term papers and reports. I also use it for "canned" replies to Email requests for help or stockinformation.

Snag It ($40)
TechSmith Corporation provides a great utility for capturing screen shots. It is much better than using the Ctrl-PrintScreen combination, as it allows you to select any region of the screen plus more controls for extended captures. It can save images in many different formats and resolutions, and can even record your interaction with applications for video playback! In addition, the product comes with a simple image editor. With the latest version you can even insert audio! This is a blockbuster of a deal for an excellent tool!

ADC Viewer ($50)
From the author: "[This utility] is an award-winning picture viewer, graphic converter and digital image management tool. The latest version of this digital photo software, ACDSee 4.0, gives you intuitive, professional-quality imaging tools to get, view, organize, enhance and print your images quickly, and share them over the Internet."

AlphaClock ($25)

Replaces the system tray clock. This is a great little program, worth every penny as far as I'm concerned. Here are the features:

  • Display custom formatted time, date and day of the week simultaneously
  • Announce time information on the hour and half-hour (Can be shut off)
  • Set multiple repeating or one time only alarms with the option to display text
  • Display a fully customizable pop-up calendar
  • Automatic Atomic Clock Synchronization
  • Copy time/date to clipboard
Tclock Light (free)
In case AlphaClock is out of your budget, try this freeware system tray clock replacement. Warning! I have not tried it, so I can't guarantee quality or usability. Let me know if you like it.
